I'm about to replace the fuel pump. I am hoping this will resolve my sporadic crank no-start issues (though I'm not convinced). I have been recording my fuel trims and my fuel trim data looks consistent with a vacuum leak. I smoke tested the entire intake side via the brake booster nipple on the intake manifold. No leaks to be found. I need to smoke the exhaust side, too.

I was trying to figure out a quick way to empty the fuel tank when I realized I can use a fuel pressure gauge to route fuel from the tank to some gas cans.

I went with the premium Delphi fuel pump assembly. I am eager to get it swapped over and also not looking forward to doing it in the blazing heat.

Default Fuel Pump Assembly Replacement Time

I removed the fuel tank and am now waiting for a fuel pump lock ring tool to arrive (hopefully tomorrow). I thought I could get away with just using a brass drift but was having difficulty. I figure I'll save myself the hassle and use the proper tool.

The top of the old assembly is certainly corroded. The electrical connectors all look nice a clean, though. The top was nice and dry with no fuel leaks. I used some penetrating oil on the fuel line nut, which is what left the moisture seen in the photo.

After a bit of cleaning ^

Lock ring tool? Grab a hammer & a drift or flat head screwdriver or chisel etc... Tap the points around the entire ring until it comes loose.

Yes I tried a brass drift and mallet and was unsuccessful. The factory service manual advises against using a screwdriver or drift. I was whacking it pretty hard and didn't make any progress. I'm concerned with messing something up! I've been known to break everything I touch.

Remove the fuel line, spray with penetrating to help free, and tap at the arrows. Don't go postal on it, lightly tap each point until it loosens, then it will pop off.

Btw, I see a lot of damage on the locking tabs. Make sure to tap on the ring only.

idk but from the picture the lock unlock emblems on the tank do not coincide with the way the tabs taper to wedge the lock ring. looks like lock is unlock.

Illustration for dummies, rotate ring clockwise to lock, counter to unlock.
