Hummer H3For the Hummer driver who wants the rugged look and off road capabilities of the Hummer, but in a smaller size and with a more fuel economy friendly engine.
Btw, I see a lot of damage on the locking tabs. Make sure to tap on the ring only.
Any damage on the locking tabs was already there (I promise)! I only struck where you drew arrows (using the brass drift) and had no luck. I will spray some penetrating oil on it. The tool arrives tomorrow, so I'll just wait it out.

I'll keep you updated on if it comes off or not. I'm hoping the tool will help!
I got impatient, so I figured I would get some use out of my time while waiting. I coated portions of the frame normally blocked by the fuel tank. Eventually I'll get to the whole frame, but I figure I don't want to drop the fuel tank again just to paint. The original paint was still on the frame except for the welds, which were developing rust.
Get yourself a block of wood. Drill a couple of clearance holes the proper spacing for the lock ring slots. Mount a couple of long enough, good diameter bolts with nuts. Use that as a homemade pin spanner wrench. Or, you could get fancy and grab a length of metal stock, drill and tap it in place of the wood.

Innovation! I dig this idea a lot. If my tool wasn't arriving today, I would definitely go this route!

I believe you. I am waiting for the tool, though! I went out there and considered it. I thought to myself, "I can wait a few more hours." It's also 100°F where I'm at, so if I got it off mid-day, I would still end up waiting until tonight to re-assemble.
Your tool could do more harm than good? Time to take control, don't be afraid to tap that lock ring! I've removed hundreds over the years, takes less time on the metal tanks when severely rusted, I just used a cutoff tool/air chisel. Just make sure to install a NEW lock ring! Watch the video I posted above! Edit: MAKE SURE YOU'RE TAPPING COUNTER CLOCKWISE ON THE LOCK RING! Also check those lock tabs that appear damaged.

Tool snapped. Plan B. Still no success with brass drift. I did watch the guide you posted yesterday. I don't think the lock tabs are damaged, but maybe! I have only tried counter clockwise (tapping and with the tool). It looks like if I bent those lock tabs upwards, it would come off quite easily. Should I bend them up or just carry one with brute force?
A cutoff wheel is my best bet, I think. Thank you for the idea. I should have thought of that before!

I can see them haha. I'm using a brass drift and a dead blow mallet. I have other "weapons" in the arsenal. I will try a large diameter pin punch and my 3 lb beauty.
If anyone needs this page for future reference (got it from a friend).
Fuel pump assembly replacement from factory service manual.
Damn you... I might just have to give you those rims.
The 3 pound "attitude adjuster" and a pin punch popped it right off. So much for wasting my weekend waiting on the tool (which snapped in 1 minute). Now I have to bicycle to work tomorrow because I won't have it re-assembled in time!
