UPDATE: Front-end Rattle...Any Suggestions?
I had the part replaced last Tuesday (7-31-07) and I'm sorry to say, my H3 is still rattling in the steering column when I ride over small bumps, brake at stop signs, etc. I am awaiting a call from the service writer now...I'm so glad I found this forum--now I feel prepared to talk with him. I will be pointing him to this blog--but I suspect they already know the deal. Thanks for all the info.
And this thread goes on and on.... I was told today 8/7/07 by a Tampa, FL area HUMMER dealer, that they don't have any idea when the new part will become available but they are packing the shaft full of grease and that seems to be keeping the problem at bay. Not exactly what I'd call a good fix but if it keeps the shaft from rattling and driving me razy it may be worth a try. I was told it took about an hour to do and will stop the rattle until the new part can get in.
just FYI...
Hearing your post about packing the steering column with grease reminded my of my 02 avalanche that had the same problem.
The dealer told me it was because the column was not filled up with grease that does act to dampen any motion of the shaft. It fixed the problem completely. I am not saying it will work for the H3 but it is a valid point.
I have an appt to take mine in this wednesday for a knocking coming from the front end, it sounds very similiar to all the symptoms your steering shaft people have been posting but I dont feel it in the pedals or steering wheel, I hear and feel it on the floorbaord when mostly making turns on a bumpy road. And mine is an 06 and from what I read only 07's have this problem. The dealer ( Weseloh ) at least acknowledged the fact that he knew about the steering columns.
From an earlier post about there being a batch of bad steering columns is very possible. That is what happened to all the head/valve issues with the 06 (mine included), there was a batch of bad heads that did not seal up, after the master die for the head was finished and new die used the problem went away.

Igot the same problem. Lucky for me, a member at at gmhummer.com sent me this message that i pasted on teh bottom.he was right on the money. Hummer is now ordering the piece. The problem, according to other members is that the piece has yet to be redesigned. So it seems likely that the problem will comeback. But the warranty will cover it. Godd luck to us all.Check it out:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
A clunk or knock noise is heard and felt through the steering wheel or brake and accelerator pedals, the cause is a slip/stick condition in the lower steering shaft. This is a temperature sensitive issue and usually requires the vehicle to have been driven for a period of time to increase under hood temperatures
Recommendation/Instructions:
Replace the lower steering shaft part no. 25776339. There is a high probability that replacing the shaft will correct the condition as there are only a small percentage of parts that exhibit this condition. This PI will be updated when a new part number becomes available.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
