You don't need to press the button "plenty"! Same concept of your home light switch, press once, on, press again, off.

I know, pushed in deactivates the lights completely, except mine are now staying on all the time, not good while driving at night. I suppose I could pull the bulbs but that really wonn't fix my problem.

When you hook up the battery the H3 does a systems check and cycles the HVAC to confirm its settings. The PCM stores the last 300 ignition cycles power/no power. Installing a set of Battery Terminal Connectors is not very difficult. Patience is a virtue.
