I have run Toyo tires for many, many years. (4 sets) But the latest Open Country AT3 tread design has left me a bit disappointed. It’s still a good tire, just not a great tire as it’s gotten louder then the AT2’s. I’m still getting great even wear, it’s just not as road quiet as the AT2 was.

So when I was buying new tires for the H3, I was going to get the Toyo AT3 or the new R/T. But a neighbor who put the R/T on his truck said they were much louder then the AT3, and he thinks they are going to wear quicker.

So I had looked at the Cooper Discoverer AT3 tire awhile back and they have great reviews. I was talking to the owner of the family run tire shop I get my tires from. He said they are a great tire. He said probably underrated as the tread look is not as aggressive as most other AT tires and those who like the more aggressive tread skip the Cooper. But he said he’s seen great reviews On & Off road with the Discoverer AT3. I’m pretty sure the Cooper Discoverer is 3 Peak Snowflake rated tire too!

But in the past year or so, Cooper released a new version of the AT3, called the AT3 XLT. It’s the same tire, but with a more aggressive sidewall tread. It helps strengthen the sidewall and rock abrasion, plus it gave the tire a tougher look.

My tire guy told me if I wanted to try the Cooper on the H3 he would give me a few dollars off and Cooper had a $75 rebate. I’m thinking the Cooper was $45 cheaper per tire vs the Toyo? He was pretty sure I’d be happy with them.

So I did it and bought 5 tires. So far I’ve been very impressed with the ride quality and they are much quieter than the Toyo’s on my Silverado.

To be honest & fairness the Silverado has 18-20K on the Toyo AT3, and they got noisier around 10K-12K miles. I have about 1.5-2K on the Coopers, so I don’t know how they will be in another 12K miles?

Here are the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT on the H3.

I wrote a bit about my recent switch to Cooper Discover ATP2 in a review post last year. 12,000 miles in and they're still going great. My only semi-complaint would be that the tread seems to grab and retain rocks more than other sets I've owned. I drive on the rock roads every once in a while and I always end up digging out rocks that are wedged in the tread for a solid week afterwards.

Small price to pay, though. They have a great feel on the road and I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a solid A/T. Believe the ATP2 is less expensive than the AT3s as well. I've had 285s for years of primarily street driving and think they're perfect.

The tires are a 285/75-16 which is stock on a H3 with Adventure Package. No aftermarket lifts.

I don’t remember the actual price of the tire? I did 5 tires, 5 new TPM sensors, plus labor. Like mentioned the tires were cheaper than the Toyo which I have run for years on my Silverado.

100% agree with the small rock stuck in the tread comment.

I have yet to go off road with these Cooper tires, and I’m already finding small stones once in a while in the tread, which is not something I get with the Toyo’s. It’s because the tread blocks are closer on the Coopers, but that’s why you get the better raid handling and reduced tire noise.

I went with 305/70R16s, Mickey Thompson Baja Legend MTZs.... same 33" Dia. as 285s, but an inch wider like the 315s. The Coopers are excellent as well.
