Well all the ususal checks spring to mind, check the fuse, check power to the wipermotor connectors.etc. (see pdf)
The wiper itself houses the control module which is prone to failure due to water/moisture ingress, if you're electronically able it is repairable but in any case a new motor is not that expensive.

which explains the assembly quite well, although its for a 2005 ModelYear your could well be similar.

Wipe "Clunk" fix
Indeed, a long thin stick helps!
Did you have any play in the driver's side (LHS) pivot bearing?
Mine was really bad, easily 3mm to 4mm. The audible the "clunk" when the wiper changed direction was very annoyingly loud.
I fixed it by cutting a 1/2" tap washer and sliding it in the gap, it also stopped the wiper-blade lifting away from the windscreen. Simple and effective fix.
