LOL, thanks for bailing me out on that one JD ... I was not about to try to explain squelch .. I guess I would say it limits the signal spectrum to only the stronger signals/low static ...

And if you get stuck in a pit I don't think you need a radio for us to hear you hehehehhehee ... :-)

 

I will give you lotion for it to put on its skin if you are in a pit. It does what its told, or it gets the hose.

I just put it to Channel 9 and said "Danger, Will Robinson, Danger" and apparently they didn't like that too much...............

 

the squelch, as jd mentions, determines how well your cb receives. it's basically setting the sensitivity on your receiver, so when you hear noise it means that you're picking up everything from sunspots to dogfarts. back it off just to the point where the static goes away and you should have some good range. they're very susceptible to interference, especially power lines. the receive filters are pretty wide open to accomodate the wider channel range on newer ones (ch 1-40), so they let in just about anything. as long as you're close to line of sight with each other, you should be fine even if you don't have an external antenna. if you're going to do this a lot, i'd recommend an antenna on the roof, mag-mount or permanent. that will increase your range substantially.

Better him than me Shorty, better him than me!!!!!! And yes, definitely a good call on the external antenna. I've played around with mine enough to realize I probably need to just go ahead and get one .. wish I would've gotten one while I ordered my CB but hind sight is always 20-20 they say ... ohh well ... at least they only run about 30 bucks.

 

go with a mag mount if you're not going to use it much, and put it in the center of your roof. put some canvas between the magnet and the roof to keep it from scratching. the monster size roof will give you an excellent ground-plane.

 

That's what I was thinking ... though I intend to go with the Gobi Stealthrack here sometime this spring (hopefully) ... have you had any issues with it on yours!?
