Default 08 alpha H3 steering and pedal clunking noise

Just noticed the clunking noise in steering wheel and brake pedals when going over small bumps in the road the other day.

Luckily I am not the only person with this problem...

Looks like I will be going back to the dealer to check this out.

can someone tell me where I can get the TSB ?

Rattles, clunks, and bangs suck. It could be something as small as a brake caliper bushing knocking, sway bar link worn out, ball joint worn out, or any number of things I don't know you put on your truck (lift kits, shock mounts, etc.) Ok, it does it after 10 miles. If it were body related, it would do it from the start. Steering shaft does loosen up after it gets warm, but it is not serious. It cannot seperate or make you lose control. But many other things can. Either way, if there is a noise, take it in. There are more places to take it than the dealer, too.

So I finally gave up and took it to the dealer for an opinion. They think it's the heat shield on the exhaust manifold. But all of the bolts are tight. I'm still at a loss. This rattle is driving me nuts....

I didn't read the entire thread, but did they replace the steering shaft joint that has been causing all the clunking etc? I had mine changed and the clunking stopped.

I just bought an '07 H3 with 67k on it, have driven it for about 900 miles and noticed a noise develop. However, it doesnt have the same symptoms as the steering shaft one you guys are all describing. My noise is a rattle coming from under the drivers side front end of the truck, but only at speeds over 30 MPH.

I don't feel it in the steering wheel or the pedals, only on the floor and very lightly at that. Going to take it to the Chevy dealer tomorrow to do the hood latch recall, and I will ask them to inspect that noise as well.

Mine isn't a clunk, it's more of a metal to metal rattle, and is coming from he passenger side front. I've seriously gone over it from top to bottom and can't find it. There's no vibration in the pedals or steering wheel.

We have an '06 H3 and have the driver's side rattle on any bumpy road. We've taken it in to the dealer (GM - not Hummer because they're too far away) several times but they can't find anything. Is the steering shaft problem limited to the '07 models?

The steering shaft noise isn't even limited to the H3! There are a ton of GM cars with the same noise. But it is usually a more subtle noise. It usually sounds like it is right in front of you.

My rattle was coming from the front passenger side. It ended up being the heat shield vibrating against the exhaust where the exhaust manifold met the exhaust pipe. I pryed it away a bit and dimpled the shield to make it more rigid. This fixed the problem.
