Craig,
I found this forum because simply because my AC stopped blowing. Your thread popped up and I'm hopeful that I might be able to fix this thing myself... maybe. I would consider myself to be illiterate when it comes to fixing cars, but I'm handy. I can follow directions and pictures definitely do help (unfortunately, I can't see your pictures). My question is this: Rather than remove the glovebox first, I leaned down and looked under to see if there was anything unusual to see. I saw the red plug and it did not appear burned or melted at all. Should I continue with your suggested repair, or would I have been able to see the problem right away? Did anyone successfully do this repair and get their AC working again, eventhough the red plug appeared undamaged? Thanks!
Kim

Standard procedure on electrical problem is,assume nothing,check/swap fuses, relays. Refer to your book and follow it carefully.
You could wiggle the connector slightly.
The resistors are rarely bad, usually contacts or?

If not, do you recall the 800 number?

How did that process work? Did you have the dealership/mechanic call that number or what?

I'm not savvy enough to solder anything and don't really want to do a bunged up self-repair.

THANKS!
I actually was at a Cadillac dealership having some work done on my great aunt's Cadillac. I mentioned to the service manager that I was having this issue, and that from what was being said on the forum that it was a fairly common problem. He said that it was also a common problem on GMC trucks and that they fixed it all the time. I asked if they could also do it on my Hummer. He said that they could do it, but he didn't know if it would cost me or not. So he gave me the number for Hummer support. (866-486-6376)

I called and got a very helpful lady on the phone. I described the issue and told her that the SM at the dealership mentioned that it was also a common problem on trucks and that he could fix it but it would be up to them if it cost me or not. She asked to speak to him. After a few minutes he handed back the phone to me and told me to make an appt to bring my truck to him and that he would fix it for free under some sort of 'brand loyalty' deal because I still had my Hummer.

It was very simple. The lady on the phone was very friendly and even called me back a few times to make sure I was satisfied. In my case, it was definitely not up to the dealer if they charged me, in fact it was the opposite. It was up to Hummer. So my suggestion would be to talk to a dealer service dept first (preferably Cadillac), and then call Hummer from there. If you follow what I did, I bet you will have the same result. The other way someone described sounds just like the radiator issue where it is up to the dealer whether to charge you or not.

Thanks for the responses. I did have another question before I proceed. I checked inside the fuse box and noticed that one of my fuses is missing. It's number 62 (Air Pump). Could this be the issue? Is this fuse socket typically empty? My inclination is to think not, but I figured I'd throw it out there and ask first.
Thanks,
Kim

Thanks for the response, Songman!
I'll take your lead and see what happens.

One question though...
When replacing the red wiring harness, does that require any soldering?

I already have a new resistor. I still need the red harness (GM Part #12059296) and the 5 Terminal Pins (GM Part #12015860). Will soldering need to be done here?

Update: I left my husband with my truck and this thread while I went to work today. It took him about an hour, but he fixed it! Same problem and fix as everyone else. He did wish that the photos from the original post were still available, but he managed just the same. Cost--$0 and an hour of time.
Thanks so much everyone!

Default me too

Newbie to the forum.
mine went out today. Pretty shocking that this just melts and no warning. fixed by removing the bad end of the red plug and wiring the problem end direct to the relay. was pretty easy except of the heat and it under the dash and i am over 6 feet.
Thanks for all the great info.

First time this happened I was under warranty and they "fixed" it, Evidently not.

I guess my number was up again at 78 K miles. lets see

1) radiator issue CHECK
2) ignition coils CHECK
3) Blower relay CHECK CHECK

thanks for the info guys did a quick soldering fix today in vegas it was 104 when it when out, only had to suffer a few miles to home. Finished it up this am works great but I ordered new harness from GM parts direct that someone else post, I just don't like the way my solder job came out...

really appreciate this having this board here as a source of info guys!!

when doing this do you need to disconnect your battery?

I soldered mine a few months back and haven't had any trouble with it. No need to disconnect the battery.

I think turning the fan switch too fast, to high fan may be causing more of these to fry. That's what happened to mine anyway. I turn mine more slowly now.
