Default 2006 Hummer H3 problem

When backing or drive and turning sharp, vehicle will hesitate ( jerking motion) kind of like locking up.
Also, when in drive, when turning a little sharp it will
make a deep groan sound.
We flushed power steering.
Mechanic thinks it is stuck in 4 wheel drive. My indicator light shows regular 4⬆️ ( not lock)
any ideas on how to fix this problem??
Thank you.

Welcome to HF.

How many MILES? How long have you owned your 3? H3s have a very tight turning radius (to navigate off road obstacles) and some people with no experience with a FT 4X4 do not understand you can feel what you are describing on dry pavement even if there is nothing wrong. H3s are always in 4WD (similar to AWD in Hi, and 4X4 locked in 4hi lock) If the hesitation/jerking you are describing is new, then it could indeed be stuck in lock. You can search H3 Plastic Shift Fork for additional information...

Your almost certainly has the plastic shift fork in its Transfer Case since it is an 06. The plastic can heat up, wear out or become flimsy and leave the T Case stuck in lock. GM later switched to a metal shift fork to correct the situation.

Standard procedure for any 4X4 that has a T Case stuck in lock... in a safe area, back up turning back and forth for a bit to take the load off the lock fork, then see if that helped. Look at your owner's manual, shift from 4hi to 4 lock (preferably on a loose dirt surface NOT dry pavement), move a short distance, then shift back to 4hi and see if that helped. Try backing up as described above again....

Next, get a better mechanic that knows what they are doing and has familiarity with an H3 Transfer Case.

Good luck

1. With the transmission in "N" press the 4HI LOCK button, wait for the light to stop flashing and become solid. Then press the 4LO button, wait for the light to stop flashing and become solid (most likely you will hear/feel a slight clunk). Then press the 4HI LOCK button, wait for the light to stop flashing and become solid. Now press the 4HI Unlock button wait for the light to stop flashing and become solid. If it will go through the stages and the light becomes solid every time continue the process 4-5 times going back to 4HI Unlocked and go for a drive to see if the tires chirp or lurching anymore.

2. Cheap and easy to swap out the Transfer Case fluid as it may be low or neve been changed. ONLY for 2006 and very early 2007 with a vin prior to 5GTDN13E778100102.. the procedure is to fill up to the fill hole, then put the fill plug in and remove the speed sensor connector then the speed sensor. It's near the top of the transfer case and a connector is on it, driver side. Fill another 250ml fluid in and put the sensor back in and reconnect the connector.

3. If none of that helps, you will need to have the Tcase removed (or you can do it yourself), crack it open and replace the shift fork.
