Hummer H2For those who like a little more gleam to their Hummer, the H2 offers a similar rugged look as the H1, but as a lower cost, and with more added features, making it almost a massive luxury SUV.
from my recent experience 3 weeks ago doing a similar job on my 03 was that i had to really chisel away at the scale because all the wire wheels would just do was polish the heavy scale and not remove it. hammering away at it helped a lot and whatever scale stood i chiseled off. a heavy rasp file also came in handy to loosen the scale. also try to get eye protection that seals around the eyes like ski goggles do because that stuff will find itself into your eyes with the regular glasses style eye protection.
inspect your lower body bushes as well there are 12 of them if the bottom washers feel rough they are most likely on the verge of falling apart. the bottom washers that hold them in place most likely are rotting away. especially the ones near the wheel openings
inspect your brake and fuel lines as well while you are back there. luckily the previous owner of mine had the entire brake system converted to stainless lines and braided hoses all the 4 corners and all the way to the master cylinder. wish they had done the rest of the lines too LOL. my fuel lines have seen better days so have my oil cooler and power steering lines. there pretty cruddy.
Thank you for your advice. I will do as you recommend and see what I find out. I’m dropping the Hummer tomorrow to have some body and paint work done. Once I get it back I plan on dropping g the gas tank and I will then start to clean things up. I have a couple ball ping hammers, heavy files and some chisels. I plan to go over the frame and crossmembers as well as possible. I’m not as interested in the suspension parts because I plan to start replacing parts after I do the frame. Once I have the frame as good as I can get it, I’ll then use the wire brushes to clean it further... then I’ll clean, prep and start the paint process. I hope it turns out ok... no matter what it will be better.
Please feel free to offer offer advice or any helpful info. I am thinking I’m a week or two out )no idea how long the body and paint will take).
I picked up my Hummer, now at the paint shop. The metal fabricator had to make 3 patch panels to remove the rust. He is a very talented fabricator. I’m well on my way to be rust free. Once I get it back I will start on the frame.
Few pics of his work, wish I had the final pics.. I’ll post more after paint. These are from the first day.
Looks like new again. I’m so glad that I will never have to go thru rust issues here. Everything here just melts dries out or falls off from the heat. I don’t understand how in modern times cities and states are allowed to destroy vehicles salting roads. I’m sure there is something else that can be used but they don’t want to spend the money and have no issues with you paying to fix what they have done. They don’t spray salt on airplane wings!
Ok folks. I started the prep to work on the frame. I need to replace the fuel pump because it’s rotted out and I also want to drop the tank to clean up the frame. All my lines broke off the pump, I removed the filler tube and the rear vent tube... also the two electrical plugs. I dropped the tank down and popped the plastic lines out of the top of the tank. BUT I have a line that runs to two blue things on top of the tank. Front and rear. How do I disconnect that one I’m thinking it must be forward of the tank? I’m searching now.
