Hummer H2For those who like a little more gleam to their Hummer, the H2 offers a similar rugged look as the H1, but as a lower cost, and with more added features, making it almost a massive luxury SUV.
A while back I added a winch to the front of the H2. The receiver in the front makes it nice as you can easily remove if you wish. Yes, the winch needs to be removed if you need to access under the hood. Takes only a moment to remove with the hitch pin (lockable) and quick disconnect of 12v. There is a power switch located under the hood mounted on the cover that goes over the ECM. So basically 12v power lead from battery to switch & switch to disconnect mounted by receiver, frame negative to disconnect. The disconnects (quick connects) are similar to that used on golf carts. The wires were routed up from below and the disconnect was mounted into one of the existing license plate mounting holes & the second was drilled & tapped for a second screw. The winch is rated at 13k (Chinesium) but in my case, most likely will never be used- just after years of owning wanted to try a different look for a bit- The entire setup looks great and was installed carefully, If anyone wants a parts list its as follows. Of course some may want Warn or similar (I had a Warn on my last fusion orange but couldn't justify the additional cost for what's most likely never going to be used).
You will need the winch cradle ( if horizontal holes at receiver- you will need to drill vertical).
Make sure integrity is not lost from drilling an additional hole - this post is just to show a clean install, of what in my case is H2 jewelry....no idea what works/safe in your individual situation/install
1. Rugcel 13500lb waterproof electric synthetic rope 12v winch . Double color rope & wireless remote (about $400)
You may also need assorted copper lugs, heat shrink, battery terminal adapters, a 5/8" drill bit etc.. Really depends on if you find a mount with a vertical hole (Warn had that mount plate style) and how much wire work you need to do. The switch comes with the winch. With the hitch pin- buy a telecscoping magnet (used for getting hitch pin in and out of the bumper hole recess). MAKE SURE HITCH PIN IS MAGNETIC (if not- you will remember why I said get steel when its very difficult to get the pin out of the recess) Hummer did have a long pin for this, but its not lockable....
years ago, couldn't find now). I also changed the hook to a different style.
This just gives you an idea of what is possible with install.
Looks good! I did the same with mine. chinesium quick connects with a harbor freight winch and hitch mount. I'd recommend running the ground directly to the battery. a winch of this size can easily pull over 300 amps when loaded up. I wouldn't trust the factory grounds which are not any bigger than 4 guage and already have to handle the power from the rest of the truck. Probably not a big deal if you aren't using it heavily, but when you do, thicker cable can make a big difference in pulling power, and of course... not burning the truck down.
Love the clean look of your H2 also, compared to a lot of garbage trucks we see on this forum.
Now,
time to test the Chinesium rope. Hook up to a concrete wall. Put H2 in park. Start winch and see if it will skid the truck towards said wall. If so, the rope is ok, if not, it will cost you a new windshield+ , but will not leave you stranded in the bush.
