Agree if a diode went bad it would be more evident, but if they are soldered on, then the joint can be going cold or cracking, in which case the diode in/out may be intermittent, especially when hitting a small bump in the road. Several GM (well other MFG's too) parts like braking control systems, gauge clusters etc suffer failures from bad solder joints.
