Default Crazy Wipers....

Every Now and then on my 2009 Lux H2 ..the wipers while in the on full just below Hi speed mode will go into intermittent mode and stay there. Then I shut them off and set them back to normal on low speed. Then some times when in the intermittent mode..when you try and shut them off they will go half way towards park and freeze half way up and stop.

Is this something to do with the BCM? or are we talking Wiper motor? Had this happen a few years ago and the dealer replaced wiper arm stalk with the control. But I don't think that was the problem as it came back a month latter. I have been living with it as it only happens every now and then.

So WTF is causing this????

Just a thought, but perhaps the turn signal/wiper control arm stalk or its wiring in the steering shaft. I had similar issue with the control arm in my Vette a few years ago. Changed the stalk and all was good.

...it must be a H2 option in 2009. My '09 H2 Lux does the exact same thing. I'm going to look on the RPO codes on the glove box.
I've giggled about ever wire I could find and can't repeat it, so I think it is in the BCM. I couldn't find a voltage issue either.

Thanks PGI, Yep like I said in the my first post that the dealer changed out the stalk but a month later it came back. This was a few years back as I said. But you might be onto something like the wiring in the steering shaft.
Thanks..

Thanks Muel,
I never thought of that.. Why TF would they have the wiper run for XX time in low and then have it switch to intermittent ? But that is weird to hear that you have the same problem. But Mine still every now and then will stop half way up the windshield when you go to shut it off from intermittent. Then you have to turn it on high then to low then try shutting it off again. I think the BCM is having a Brain F_ _ T ....

@Mark R

Totally familiar with wiper motors 03/07 but GM made major changes to the operation for 08/09's

Circuit-wise it looks like the BCM does control 2 things:-
  1. Line X5 (21) selects the speed of operation (only ever 2 speeds)
  2. Line X4 (7) initiates a "wipe" operation, the intermittent-wipe frequency being controlled by the BCM
Not shown are the stalk controls, however it's likely once a wipe-cycle is started it should complete irrespective BCM activity suggesting your fault is related to the motor itself.

This is only a suggestion, however water-ingress was a big problem with the old motors, it could also be true of the later ones.

Thanks Ocean Brave,
Got your PM "@" about 3 months ago I bought the complete wiper assembly with the motor new on Ebay for Cheap. Thanks for the research on this. I will try and run this down when the weather gets warmer.

I'm thinking your correct about the motor. Every now and then it might hit a dead segment on the armature and stop. Or in Normal operation kilich on a dead spot and somehow go back to intermittent.

At least they work ..I can live with the Fark up when it happens...Till I get to work on the problem.

I see 2 relays and 2 diodes on the main FB CB in OB's schematic above. If you haven't already, I'd replace the old relays and check those two diodes and their solder joints on the CB. I suspect you have already but didn't see it mentioned that the shop had inspected or replaced those.

  1. I bet you it's one of those Cheap Butt relays from over the border. If a Diode had gone I think it would be dead or not operate correctly or in my case SMOKE..L.O.L.. Thanks for the research. I appreciate your time..Both You and Ocean Brave.
