Anyone routed a aftermarket backup camera?
WHo here has routed an aftermarket backup camera for a 2003 hummer h2? And what’s the best and easiest method? I assume something along the lines of mounting in license plate area and rhen
inside and tucking up in the corners of the head liner and then down the piller and to the head unit?
Anyone have a guide or link to a guide?
thanks

It depends on where you want to put your back-up cam.
Some people have the camera internally mounted on the inside of the rear tail-gate which has the benfit of remaining clean.
My truck has a rear wheel carrier which blocks the tailgate view, so instead I mounted the camera inside the rear numberplate.
The route was Centre-Console, behind the Instrument Cluster, down the driver's door post, along the floor trunking frint & rear, inside the rear LH luggage panel, then into rear left tail-light. Once inside the tail-light there is a path out to the rear-bumper wiring and then under the vehicle through to the grommet in the bumper then out to the wheel-carrier and finally the number-plate holder. The plastic foor trunking easily pops-off. Include a wearther-proof connector in the number-plate holder so the spare-wheel can be removed.
Couple of things. Use the best quality cable you can get i.e. screened-coax for the video with red-black for the 12V feed. Beware of cheap amazon/ebay cables that claim to be for back-up cameras, these are often just twisted wires and you will find your display will be very noisy and grainy. Some cameras are rated 12V but actually 5V with an in-line voltage regulator, which is fine, but you can't shorten the camera wires beyond the plastic "bump" in the cable (the regulator) Make sure the camer power feed is fused and easily accessible.
The only disadvantage with an external camera is the rain and dirt (I'm working on a solution) however the all-round visibility is very excellent!
It may be a similar same cabling route gets you to the tailgate, possibly along the passenger side, but the feed path to the tailgate connector (C420) I'm not sure about.
There's bound to be numerous posts and YT videos on the subject, I searched for "Hummer H2 Backup Camera" and found some interesting stuff.
Good luck

I put one in not too long ago:
When I first installed the camera, from the HU I ran the wiring to the passenger side, then up the A-frame, and into the headliner, along the door jams. I fished it through the harness grommet from the headliner, removing all of the rear upper plastics and the back half of the headliner to be able to get to the backside of the pass-through. Once I got the wire through the main harness and into the tailgate it was just connecting it to the camera that I mounted to the rear plate pocket. There is a screw in the middle of the pocket lights that can be removed and drilled out slightly to mount the camera in. Oh I did have to cut the wire to feed it through the main harness.
This weekend I removed my whole tailgate and redid some of that wiring. If you have the time and knowledge to remove it I would suggest that, as fishing through the wiring harness the first time was painful! If you do this I would suggest adding a plug/socket connector in the wiring to allow connection a little easier. I would wire it up from the HU to the rear, then add a plug/socket just shy of the main harness connector. Then from the camera side, wire it through the plate holder, around the window following all of the other wiring, then in through the main harness connector, then put a plug/socket on the end of that. When you re-install the tailgate the connection should be made under the headliner. Some camera wiring has a connector built-in, but for the hummer it was in a bad location, so I added my own.

Take a look at my thread on the Gentex rear view mirror camera... I find that it is better than the camera that came with my H2...

make sure your camera has adjustable guidelines to best line up your Hummers edges
I did a camera witch is on all the time mounted directly in front of the third eye roof mounted brake lite. The 5" monitor is on a suction cup mounted right next to the "A" pillar on the windshield on top of the dash cover as low as it will go. The wiring runs behind the dash cover and comes out into the secondary fuse panel behind the pop out panel.
Then down to the floor and the wiring is tucked under the trim and carpet all the way back into the cargo area. Then I drilled a small hole thru the cargo door metal surround at the left side base and the wires feed up that channel and are tapped down inside the channel and come out where the third eye brake lamp is to the camera.
The only problem is I forgot to add an OFF/ON switch for night time driving. I'm working on that.
Check out Amazon. They have wireless BU cameras... all kinds....
