I am curious if there are "plugs" for the steering wheel if I decide I dont want the steering wheel controls. I never use the steering wheel to control my radio, so why pay for something or install something and have it inline with the radio which is another thing that could go wrong or mess up the install if I dont use any of the controls

also, I am curious what chimes and such are controlled? I mean I think I have a key in the ignition chime, but thats about it. as for using the Bose amp, I think I am going to replace that with a matched amp for the speakers I am putting in.

As for the PAC unit, I think it is a PAC C2A-GM24. Will that work to install an aftermarket HeadUnit into the wiring harness for the rest of the stereo. I know you might say "hey if you are replacing everything, you dont need a wiring harness", but I was thinking that if i dont have to rewire the whole stereo setup and that in removing saying the speakers I can just replace them with the new ones (and the same with the amp). what do you think?

Not so simple.... the harness is using data and low level signals between the head unit and the Bose amp. There are no direct speaker wires to the head unit in the dash. If you are pulling the Bose out I'm unable to help on that. I think you just about have to run all new wires everywhere as even some of the wires to the speaker locations are separated. I guess it could all be done if you wanted to try and use an amp that will physically fit and then install that under the console where the Bose amp is as I assume that is where all the speaker wires go to. You would also need to put the crossovers for the component speakers under there too. As far as I'm aware the Bose sub would also be useless as my understanding is that is bi-amped and wired very funky. From what I've read in the past, most who go that route run all new speaker wiring.

tharber and MixManSC, Do you have a how to or just some advice to make the button swap easy?
I think I am going the route of the new buttons, but afraid it might take me to take apart the whole stereo and then I might get stuck not know what I am doing, then I am left without a stereo.
anything you can help me with... thanks

As for the names you picked.... well I can say I have never heard of Panasonic speakers or amps. I have heard of Panasonic electronics, but never in the car audio market (same with Hertz). So, yes the items I would be getting would be a bit more "quality" or "car audio name brand" than those.

Tharber - do you know what key words I can use to find those new buttons. I have looked and cant find them. I have found the stickers with the key words i am trying to search for those buttons. I really would appreciate any help. That would be great!!

MixManSC - Yeah I actually just spoke with JL audio and they didnt really have high regards for the stock system, but they definitely did agree with you and said it wasnt garbage. They said that even just adding a subwoofer to the stock system (they have a subwoofer made specifically for the H2... which I am sure MixManSC already knows this) it would sound pretty decent. I guess I read other things about other older Bose units and they mostly said they were garbage stock systems with a bose name on it. not an actual bose system.
I do have to add, i am not looking for HUGE killer sound. I just want it to sound better and if i decide to crank it up it is ok, but not looking for huge competition stuff, just a clean look with some decent features. Thats why I am looking to get another head unit and was hoping to find out how to easily integrate it to the current setup.
sorry my short term memory. The amp was a cheap pioneer. Not a panasonic. And yes Hertz made very good speakers though next time I'm going to replace with Focal

The button swap is as easy as can be. Its harder pulling the dash apart. Take your time and you will be fine. Once out, its a few screws to get the radio face plate off and in go the new buttons. The kit I ordered had one button that was labeled differently than my original, I don't remember which one but it was close ebough that I didn't worry about it. Take a pic of the current placement to help you with the new ones.

The steering wheel buttons can be replaced too, they are easy to pry out with a small tool and come as whole switch units for under $30 each.

Hey all,
So I have made up my mind... I am going to remove the whole stereo system and replace it all

My questions are:
1) Where is the Bose sub at?
2) Removing the stock stereo will eliminate the door chimes, but what else?
3) Is there a way to keep the steering wheel controls? If not, will I only loose the ones for the radio or will I also loose the ones for the computer that shows Miles/ Insta Fuel Econ/ Timer/ etc etc...
4) Does anyone know the wiring diagram? i know some wires will have to be removed from the loom and others kept, and i would like to know which to keep
5) Are the door speakers 6.5"?

is there is anything else you think I should know to go forward with this
thatnks

Under the console somewhere.
That and the steering wheel controls related to the stereo and Onstar.
Yes - Metra ASWC. Either way you will still retain use of the other steering wheel control functions.
Complicated.... I spent a half an hour going through the GM eSI system a while back and exported each page, then combined them all into a PDF and posted it in some thread on here. Not going to do that all over again. You will have to search. It was someone on replacing their Bose amp I think that I posted about that. Should be able to dig through all posts I've made and find it - there are two different configurations for the 03-07 models which is what I posted. I dont think I tried to find that for the 08/09 models.
No sure but if like other GM's they are probably more like 6.75" but 6.5" can be fit.

I used a Kenwood head unit with the metra axxess wiring harness and steering wheel retaining module. I kept the factory speakers and amp and I feel like I have pretty good sound. You'll find that installing the stuff is the easy part once you get started. The hard/annoying part is disassembling the entire dash just to get the head unit out. You have to use the patience of a brain surgeon to get the door panels off if you're putting in new speakers. If you break one of your door panels your wallet is in for a world of hurt.
Never better said.
im still wondering why I can't get rid of the hummer and buy a new suv
I love this truck. Is Not a Suv . Is a hummer
