Default New Camera Idea

I've been trying to think of ideas for a backup camera, so I decided to purchase a wireless one on e-bay and kind of take it apart. I removed the camera from the license plate mount and installed on the rear spare cap. The cap is locked on with a wire tie(stainless) or you can use plastic. The positioning of the wire tie doesn't permit the cap to be removed from the outside so theft of the camera isn't a problem. To take the cap off you have to remove from the inside by taking the jack out and pushing it out.

I then purchased a led light with cigarette lighter (goose neck) from pep-boys and took that apart. I used that to mount into the monitor screen and soldered the hot and ground wires. You can see from the last picture that the monitor mounts into the cigarette lighter so you remove it when you don't want to use it.

The camera is wired into the rear wiper motor, yellow for hot when car is on and black for ground. I thought it was a great idea to have the camera on when the car is on so I can see regardless if I am going in reverse. I've had this running for a couple of months and no issues with the camera burning out. If you want you can wire through the door wires into the left rear reverse lights.

Let me know what you think?

Looks really well done. Im very impressed... how's the signal for the wireless any issues in inclimate weather? My only concern would be rain or snow (im in NE) would kill the cam itself.

The camera a got from e-bay is the one in the orange box, the signal is excellent, better than any other one I"ve had before. It has an excellent signal with no interference. I was about $119

I had another camera that I took apart and did just that. I had a small hole with just the lens coming through. This camera is a bit different because it has separate night vision led's on each side. Also on the top of the camera it has a sensor to determine when it's dark. That's the only reason I mounted it this way. You can't really steal it, the camera is bolted on from inside. Also, if you use a twist tie the way I did the center cap doesn't come off from the outside of the rim. You have to remove it by taking the jack out and pushing the cap out from the inside of the door.
