I'm looking at getting a used 2010 H3 Alpha with 8,000 miles as a family SUV. What are the reliability issues? The H3 looks has room for 3 and is somewhat capable to go off-roading with the kids and the gas mileage looks reasonable for a V8.

Are the problems you guys encounter easily fixed or is it usually a dealer repair? Is the drive-train reliable? Are the electronics reliable?

Buying in Peru means no access to easy parts.

Any help is appreciated.

 

There are no reliability issues with the V8. Parts here are not an issue except for the high third stop lamp (no longer made). If it has a sunroof, do a search for how to fix clogged sun roof drains, because they can cause an interior leak that if it gets the BCM wet, can cause plenty of trouble.

One simple fix for any electrical Gremlin is to replace the OEM Battery Terminal Connectors with a quality aftermarket set.


You need to rethink your "somewhat capable off-roading" as all you need is AT tires and you will have to look long and hard to find anything that can do what it is capable of with somebody that knows how to drive one. If you are going to wheel it, you should look into rock rails and undercarriage protection and carry a spare front half shaft in case you overdo the skinny pedal.

The 3rd brake light is still available from the dealer. I just had mine replaced this weekend at the dealer under the extended warranty.
