They say there's never a stupid question, buuuuut. Is there a preferred method to cleaning the engine bay? Last thing I need to do is make a costly mistake.( I wAs thinking degreaser and hit it with the hose) Thanks in advance!!

i got a car there with 40000 mile and the engine area looked like it just left the factory. they have a good system.

i do not spray water under the hood. inviting trouble.

 

Looks like there is a simple green auto degreaser (safe for rubber, plastic etc.) I'm gonna do some prep work with plastic and maybe tape. Soak for 15 mins or so. Scrub with a brush and rinse. All on a cold engine. I'll give a report after it's done with pictures.

 

I use regular Simple Green cut 50-50 with water.
Spray the whole engine compartment using one of those pump to pressurize garden sprayers.
Let it sit a few minutes then rinse with the garden hose spray nozzle. Just try not to get the coil packs too wet.

I usually drive around for a little while afterwards to heat it up and make it dry faster.

Can use most anthing that cleans/degrease and not too harsh to discolor the plastics..
The secret is to clean a warm engine, and use engine dressing when done..

I prefer the simple Green 50/50 mix also. On a cold engine. Spray, soak for 5 minutes, rinse and repeat on the tougher places. Then I use the leaf blower to dry.

 

X2 on the leaf blower.

 

About 1/2 a cup of Tide liquid laundery detergent in bucket of water applied with soft brushes and rags on a wet engine also works great. It really cuts through the oil film and leaves a nice sheen on all the plastic parts.

Your statement about CD-2 is mostly correct, but not about their Engine Detailer in the end. A portion of the CD-2 line was purchased by Turtlewax, some is currently being marketed by them, some was shelved, some was sold off. Turtlewax changed the CD-2 formula for pump spray and it died, sales tanked then they and sold the formula.

RSC acquired the Engine Detailer formulation (through a couple of moves) and relabeled it.... GUNK Engine Protector Shine. I can't swear it is identical, but it does have that same lovely smell.
