Well, no. Back in the '60s and '70s four wheel drive pick ups came that way so you weren't turning the front axle and diff when in 2 WD.
In the '80s they came up with other ways to disconnect the front diff.
I have no idea how all that works now, but I'm guessing that it wouldn't help much now.
