95 H1 Diesel Stalls, Smokes, Hard to Start
Hi All,
I have a 95 H1 Diesel. 24,000 miles.
It has the following persistent problem:
Usually after the first cold start, it will stall about 1 mile down the road. Once stalled, it takes many cranks to start again. The problem seems to not be as bad if I manually shift through the gears and let it rev very high prior to changing gears.
It generally lacks power and will often sputter and spew lots of white smoke on acceleration.
I have run "sea foam" fuel additive in it, which seems to make it better, but still doesn't fix the problem.
Have changed all filters and the fuel pump.
I have had the problem for the last 3 years or so. I drove through some high water (~3 feet)a couple of months ago, and that made the problem worse, although it never stalled when in the high water.
Any ideas?
Jeff

I would check the glow plugs.... another source for issues if it a fuel starvation issue would be the oil pressure switch, as your fuel pump is tied into the oil pressure switch circuit.....

the 95 hummer has a n/a engine so it could only be fuel issue. either the fuel injection pump, lift pump not coming on or shutting off while driving or poor quality of fuel. my guess is if you have had this problem for the last 3 years i would guess it to be the injection pump.
if i had the hummer in my service department i wouldcheck injection pump out put and i would also do a compression test on the engine. those engine used to blow head gaskets a lot.
