So all I would need to install a newer gm radio would be a wiring harness?

Haven't seen any posts/info regarding a plug & play GM radio with just an AUX IN. Just to change the radio will involve removing the center console and front panel etc which hardly seems worth the effort.

Most folks want to upgrade to Bluetooth, Sat(USA)/DAB(UK) Radio, SAT NAV, Andriod Auto, MP3, DVD, USB, SD Card etc, Back-Up camera which is why your post seemed to be "hijacked"

When changing the stock radio your steering controls, Chimes and OnStar will all need to be considered, not too sure what happens to the rear controls can't recall reading about this. When I get a moment I'll check my H2 to see what happens to the rear controls, I suspect they no longer work.

You could look at an FM transmitter device to get AUX input this way which would be very cheap and quick.

Thanks oceanbrave. I was really wanting to keep all of the controls so I had the thought that maybe a newer radio from a gm might just be a plug and play idea. I am also looking at a product from I simple which adds the aux function and they are relatively inexpensive. Let me know what you find out on yours.
Thanks

Checked and indeed the rear controls no longer work however they were never used so not really missed.

Good luck with your quest!

Never ridden in the back of mine and never really looked to see what controls there are, but I know at a minimum the rear speakers can be turned on/off from the back. Kids...

There are two ***** on my panel each close to a headphone jack according to the user manual these control the headphone levels rather than the speakers. I did try the headphone jacks and adjusting the ***** and neither seemed to work, nor did any of the other controls.

I doubt any newer GM radio would integrate seamlessly with our older systems. I upgraded my stock 6-disk to a touchscreen GM NAV unit and even doing that I ran into some hiccups at the dealership. Everything is good now without issue. There are mods you can do to the radios to add an aux in but you have to remove the radio and open it up. Always thought about doing it but never got around to it.

lojac963 and oceanbrave are right, even if there was a gm radio that would fit in the area the wiring and factory programming would be costly, after market and good installer is the way to go. cost and feature wise.

Very true. I don't know if even a dealership could make a newer radio work as they just bind the radio to the VIN and sound system.

For aux in, bluetooth, etc, etc one would definitely have to go aftermarket with all the interfaces.

I did a double din DVD player/radio in my 06 GTO many years ago. Using different interfaces I got all the controls (steering wheel) and other odd and ends working as stock. It was miles of wiring to make the harness with all the interfaces but it is definitely possible.

This is what is involved in accessing the stock radio, ignore everything after the main DIN connector left and right, that's just wiring for the new radio system.

This link regarding kit is worth a read and also this one dealing with dash removal , plus all the related posts, its a subject well covered.
