Hummer H3For the Hummer driver who wants the rugged look and off road capabilities of the Hummer, but in a smaller size and with a more fuel economy friendly engine.
I'm looking to rebuild my steering rack on my '06 H3. I've purchase a seal rebuild kit and the bushings. My question is, what tool is needed to remove what looks like an inverted HEX bolt? I'm not even sure what it's called?
Anyone ever removed one of these?
Most people just replace 20 year old 4X4 steering racks, much faster and sure way to reliably get back on the trails.
Let us know what you do and how it goes. There is GM truck rebuild info out there on the web that may be helpful. If it were me, I would replace it, save the old rack and look into rebuild/refresh when I have time for a project for a spare.
I've thought about that too but I like the challenge of rebuilding it. So far, I've got about $75 in parts. If I'm not happy with the results, I'll just purchase another unit. I did watch that video and it was quite helpful actually. There's really not much to these things. As long as the kit is good quality, it should be fine. This one isn't the original. I actually bought it used about 3 years ago.

maybe you can find a cast iron plumbing cap plug at a hardware store that fits maybe wit a bit of grinding on the faces then either weld a bar to it or put the plug in a vise and spin the rack. https://www.rpswaterpumps.com/produc...steel-hex-plug
