Hummer H3For the Hummer driver who wants the rugged look and off road capabilities of the Hummer, but in a smaller size and with a more fuel economy friendly engine.
So I'm driving my H3 Basic 3.7L down to the bottom of Baja with a heavy load in a week or so and wanted to monitor my trans oil temps. I could install a gauge but there's no good place for it. I started reading threads about ScanGauges and got to thinking there might be a iPhone/OBD II reader that could give me a trans temp read-out and a lot more info while I'm driving. Does anyone know of one that they have had success with? I'm going to install an aux trans oil cooler with fan to help keep the trans temps down...It's going to be a 1200mile HOT drive. Thanks!
I use a cheap OBDII reader from amazon with the Torque app (I got the pro version). I believe the app is available on apple, but not 100% sure. It is a very nice app, and I am able to read transmission temps, though I needed to download a GM add-on (available in-app) to get the trans temp (you might need the pro version to do this).
I think it is a great little app that is pretty powerful. I can also read basic engine codes, but anything else (body codes, transmission codes, 4WD codes, etc.) are not available with this setup. Readings are fairly real-time, but not instantaneous (10-seconds maybe).
If you go this route I can help with the add-ons if you need it.

Here's a screen shot of one of my pages:
Thanks Brothapig! I'll order up the OBD and research to see if there is an apple version. And I'll take you up on helping with the add-ons if I hit any snags.
and use it on my iPhone with two apps: Car Scanner and OBD Fusion. Both connect via Bluetooth within the apps and I've never had issues with either. OBD Fusion costs $10 and is much more customizable than the Car Scanner app, but really Car Scanner is just fine for basic tools, monitors, check engine light removal, etc.
