Hummer H3For the Hummer driver who wants the rugged look and off road capabilities of the Hummer, but in a smaller size and with a more fuel economy friendly engine.
I need to replace my front driveshaft cv joint. It looks like the rubber seal has a crack and it’s flinging grease.
My question is has anyone added a second “over boot” that clamps to the driveshaft and on the first step on the outer cv housing flange? This would protect the primary rubber seal from debris, and if it cracked the outer boot would keep the grease in and not fling out.
We do something like this on our desert race cars. They were a tougher boot to protect the inner rubber boot.
Here is an example of how we would double boot a CV boot in an off road race car.
Here is where I was thinking the boot would clamp on the Hummer driveshaft CV flange.
Has anyone ever done this, if so what boot did you use? Any reference to a part number or model?
No. I've rebuilt the entirety of the front driveshaft and did not place a second boot on it. You can also purchase a brand new replacement driveshaft ready to go.
If you desire using the second boot you could install it while doing the rebuild.

Do you know the brand of replacement driveshaft you used? The prices very allot.

Had some difficulty with this shaft but vendor treated me OK. Sadly none if these fit the normal oem for me. The oem just work better most of the time. But these parts off Amazon just plain work. Add a lot of the good grease.

I ordered a new complete front driveshaft from Fort Wayne Clutch & Driveline in Indiana. I called them and spoke with Steve who coincidentally has a H3 himself. Their built in house driveline was 1/2 the price of a GM driveshaft on Rock Auto. Notice in the pictures below their PN# SKU # is the same as the GM OEM PN # as they make them to OEM specs with OEM or better parts.
They offer a new built to order complete driveshaft that has a Spicer front u- joint and either the AAM (OEM) or Dana Spicer CV joint. Current they have not been able to get the AAM CV joint, so they built my driveline using the Dana/Spicer CV. They said they actually think the Dana is a better CV as AAM is using allot of 3rd party manufacturers and they are not sure where the OEM replacement parts are being made, especially on older discontinued vehicles.
I ordered on Monday, and they told me it could take up to 3 days to make, but they knocked it out in a day and shipped on Tuesday. It arrived in California on Friday and I installed on Saturday.
Sorry no pictures of the driveshaft, but I put it side by side with my original OEM AAM driveshaft and it looked exactly the same, and bolted right up without issue.
I will give a couple 1000 mile review . Hope this helps someone else looking for a good driveshaft and they do sell just the CV if you want to rebuild your original driveshaft. I might order another CV and rebuild my OEM driveshaft, just to have??
