Default Dirty and missing oil

2007 hummer h3 138k miles

Changed the oil, drove it for around 1000miles, oil is really dark and I was low . I had to add roughly a half a quart . Or little more than half. Is that normal?

or what may be the problem ?

I think there are a lot of trucks with that oil burn. I've got about that, albeit with more miles. In fact I believe gm considers 1 qt per 2k miles acceptable, even for vehicles under warranty.
I can't really answer the question on it being dirty though. Mine gets darker fairly quickly as well.

If you are really concerned, send in a sample and get it tested.

Blackstone laboratories is one. $35. They'll test for water, metals, dirt, acids, additives, etc.

What oil and filter did you use? When was the last time you replaced or cleaned your air filter?

My old 07 and my current 09 Alpha did/do not burn any oil. Dirt in the oil is in part a product of your environment. Dusty dirty air gets sucked in and it is the air filter and oil filters' job to remove as much as possible. Cheap filters are cheap for a reason.

Doc points out a often overlooked point. Environment has much to do with overall performance. If junk is entering your combustion chamber thru intake. It will penetrate and foul your lube. Thereby burn and tarnish oil.

Check replace air and clean MAS flow as part of service routines for best practice.
