Can An H3 Be Flat Towed Behind A Motorhome Or Truck?
Hi Everyone,
I am a brand new H3 forum member. I have an opportunity to purchase a 2010 H3. It would be my first Hummer. If I cannot flat tow it behind my motorhome (all 4 tires on the pavement) I don't want to buy it. I have a 5000 pound hitch on my motorhome and everything is rust-free so I have no concerns about towing integrity. I just need to know a few things before considering an H3.
1) Can the H3 be flat towed with the transfer case in neutral, without unforeseen mechanical consequences?
2) Is hardware available to flat tow an H3? Roadmaster and Blue Ox are the two main choices in the flat-towing industry.
3) Is anyone here already doing what I want to do? How is flat towing working for you? How well does your H3 track behind your motorhome or truck? How well does it follow when taking sharp turns? Do the front tires get chewed up badly like my current 2006 Liberty tires do?
I currently tow a 2006 Jeep Liberty that weighs a few hundred pounds less than an H3. I use a Roadmaster tow bar, but could switch to another brand like a Blue Ox for example, if need be.
Quick responses would be greatly appreciated because I don't know how long this deal will be available to me.
Yes it can be towed. Yes there are tow bars kits out there. An H3 is a lot more than a few hundred pounds more than you Jeep Liberty, like 900 more, and it will always be turning front and rear axles.

Doc Olds,
Thank you for your quick reply.
You are correct about the difference in weight. Our Liberty 4x4 with automatic transmission weighs in around 4000 pounds, the H3 around 900 pounds more. It remains under 5000 pounds so that will still work within the limitations of our motorhome.
I see that Roadmaster sells THIS TOW BAR BRACKET KIT for the H3 that works with the Roadmaster Falcon-II tow bar I have for our Liberty, so that is another "plus".
My towing questions are answered. Now to inspect the vehicle. It is a 2010 with 121K miles. One other question is if my wife will like it more than her Liberty.

Thanks again for your help.
Depends on gradient resistance! The “curb weight” is the weight of the vehicle without any passengers/cargo. This is the weight when it's not being used and resting on a flat surface.
All this has become a mute discussion for me. My wife does not like the Hummer H3. I am bummed out.
If anyone in the Chicago area is interested, Willow Creek Community Church has a nice H3 for sale. I hope it's okay that I share the detail here. I am a very new member. It would nice to see this H3 in the hands of an enthusiast.

2010 H3 with 121,000 miles
Price: $9000
VERY clean, carpets have no wear and seats look exceptional
small wear/tear in driver seat base (see pic)
crack in the inside rear tail gate jack cover (see pic)
The 3-pod climate control, the right pod does not light up (assuming a burnt bulb)
Some surface rust on front bumper (see pic)
Drives and handles perfect, very nice ride
They did some work on it, I think new brakes. Ask them.
I had it on a lift and the general underside frame and mechanical has surface rust, typical for this area, just like our 2006 Jeep Liberty with 92,000 miles has.
The lower control arm upper bump-stops need replacing
Shocks appear to be original
Good and even thread on the tires
