Take another look, your cutout is next to the exhaust manifold too, which can reach up to 1200 degrees F.

The intake air comes in through the passenger side inner fender. When the factory Air Filter Box lid is on it is known as a "closed system". Coolest air available. Open systems pull air from inside the engine compartment. Not rocket science to figure out that is going to be much warmer in temperature when using an open system. Not to mention the filter element is exposed to dirt, mud, water, snow, etc....

Adding to what doc said, the H3 engine bay is extremely crowded and restricted, it endsup being a hot oven inside. Open the hood of an FJ cruiser and you will see the differencr. Even the older wranglers had more space and they arent closed up be engine/differential skid plates

Ordered my Airdoc Intake today. Probably will have it installed this month at some point.

Thanks for all the input on this thread. Next up is fixing the aerial antenna that the previous owner removed and replaced with a roof mount.

Doc & AMRG, That's correct. The only mod to the airbox should be on the intake side. You can enlarge the intake, route it properly to keep out any elements,(other than colder air), and properly seal all connections.

Personally I would get a used box and start over, however I thought of something that may also work for you:
Butyl flashing. I recently installed a window on an old garage. I flashed it with butyl rubbber and it stuck great. Thoroughly clean/degloss surface first. In your case I would flash both inside and outside the box.
