Default 2006 H3 rebuild

I've had a really hard time trying to find a donor engine that doesn't already have close to a 100.000 miles on it. My son is a mechanic and we have been discussing the possibility of just pulling the engine and completely rebuilding it. Any suggestions or recommendations on this process? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Although my son nor myself has ever rebuilt a I5 my son has been a mechanic for over 20 years mostly on Euro cars but I am confident he could get it done. Thanks in advance....

Start looking into parts for the rebuild, some of what you will need is not easy to find.

For some ideas, take a read, 3.7L engine build starts at post #38... and that is a different motor than your 06, but it might be good food for thought 07 Adventure package build thread

Which parts are the hardest to find in your opinion? Working with a limited budget so will be going back as close to stock as possible.

Since GM used the same 3.5 in the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon in 2006. Wouldn't their be availability?

Have you considered a trade in from a reliable rebuilder if you are untrained?

Thanks wpage for commenting. I have found a few Canyon and Colorado engines but all have had pretty high mileage for the price they were asking. Although I am a "shade tree mechanic" at best. My son will be taking the lead. He has been a professional mechanic for 20 + years. Have a blessed day.
