Get rid of that Onstar in your dash for some storage!
#11
I placed the order 3 days ago but haven't received any update . I guess it may be out of stock now .
In anyway will remove it . I got to take the whole panel out to replace the Rca for the headunit .
I will try to built one or use one of the single din adaptors for the double din
I always hated onstar . With today technology I see not point . Headunit offer Bluetooth, gps . Any tracking system help you find a stolen car . In my truck Is not deactivate since I replace the stereo/amp/speakers.. I also removed all the dings and dongs (those bells when door is open or seat belt off)

I have mine apart right now. Will take some pics and post later once I'm done....
Using the black PVC sheet you could line the area where the onstar is and have a much larger pocket. Even though I bought the pocket I just might line it myself for even more storage.
Right now I'm installing the new stereo/nav system. Pulling the onstar gps coax and onstar mic wires up to the stereo pocket so I can reuse those factory ones instead of adding aftermarket. Might as well use that nice built in mic and GPS antenna already in place.
This is the wiring for the onstar - attached. The mic looks to be the grey wire #655 on the last 12 pin plug along with the drain or ground wire beside it. I'll check with multimeter to be sure. Easy to remove mic from headliner - just rotate it. The first 2 pin plug shown is above the headliner by the mic itself.

Well. That was interesting. So I was opening things up today to install and aftermarket Kenwood DNX691HD stereo that I had laying around (nav, bluetooth, etc).
While I had things apart I evaluated the area where the onstar was. After testing it with the factory pocket I bought I decided I wanted to try something else. The factory pocket fits perfect and looks great but..... its pretty small and you lose a LOT of storage space by using it. So I poked around the shop and realized we do not have any scraps of the black PVC sheet I wanted to try. So looking around some more I spotted a scrap of black automotive carpet. Bingo! I took a big sheet of paper and folded, fit and cut it up to fit the opening to use as a template. Then I cut the carpet scrap to match and left a good bit sticking out the front. It works perfect! As a bonus I cut and notched the back inside so there would be a bit of carpet vertically in the back of the pocket. This works perfect to give a nice spot to poke the rear USB cable for the Kenwood into the pocket. I hate having a thumb driving sticking out of the front of a stereo.... Then with the center stack dash face back on the excess I left at the front works perfect to hold the carpet nicely in place.
Its not 100% perfect but pretty dang close. Nothing will rattle around in the pocket due to the carpet lining and it looks perfect from the outside. It truly works great. I'm going to hang onto the pocket I bought just in case I change my mind but I doubt I will.
Also if it matters or is any help... On this 2003 H2 (Luxury Bose) this requires an adapter box plus a second adapter for steering wheel controls. I went with the Metra GMOS-04 and the Metra steering wheel adapter. After some trial and error getting the steering wheel controls going all works perfect. Including soldering a new 1/8" mono jack onto the factory onstar microphone wires, and installing a GT5-1S (this is the type that Kenwood and several other brands use) connector onto the factory onstar GPS cable. Both of these also work perfect. In fact the GPS works better not then it did in another car with the Kenwood GPS antenna. It found a lock on the satellites which I was still in the shop.
When test fitting the new stereo I quickly realized that there is no room for the two adapter boxes and wiring harness. So on looking and poking a little I quickly noticed there is a large space just to the left of the stereo behind the 4WD switches. I used a dremel with a cutting bit and cut a nice chunck of plastic out of the back and left side of the stereo pocket. Wrapped the two adapter boxes in felt tape so they would not rattle or anything and they fit right in just fine behind the 4WD switches.
In a few weeks I'll tackle the Compustar security/remote start I bought on this. I plan on trying out the onstar cellular antenna for that instead of installing the antenna that comes with in on the inside of the windshield.

MixManSC, Mouser has a great selection of the GM Metri-Pack 150 terminals and connectors. Simple to just make a harness and run it to the head unit. that way no hacking the wire harness just plug it in.

I have not had a chance to mess with the mic anymore yet.... Will probably look at that this weekend and figure out whats wrong. The GPS antenna is awesome though. Its never worked so well before - it gets a signal lock incredibly fast.

I can't seem to find the pocket online anymore. Everyone says they're out of stock and can't get any. Has anybody tried aftermarket pockets with any luck? I've been looking but haven't seen anything that looks like it has the correct tabs for the h2 mounting...
