My H3 has developed an unusual noise when idling. It doesn't happen all the time, however, it is loud when it does. Strongest from the back of vehicle. Loud enough that it is audible inside the vehicle when waiting at a light and annoying when outside of the vehicle.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I developed an unexpected noise out of the rear but it was not a whine. The exhaust pipe, where it bends over the differential, has a small heat shield attached to the top of it. The shield is welded to the pipe and part of the weld broke. I fixed it with a hose clamp. Good luck

 

Try crawling under your rig and pin point the location of the humming.
