Transmission diagnosis... HELP!
FIRST POST, new owner, new member, BIG problem!
I just picked up a 2006 H3 Luxury, only 64k miles, one owner, very gently used. It passed the stringent MD inspection with no problems.
Less than 1k miles later, I was driving at highway speed and the trans won't upshift. It was behaving normally, I stopped for gas, and then pulled back into traffic and it just seems to stay in first gear. When I let off the throttle, the revs drop like it wants to shift but it does not. There was no incident, no noises, it feels fine in forward and shifts normally to reverse. I tried shifting in and out of 4H, neutral, low gears, tried driving it again w no change. Had to call AAA towing.
I took it to the shop and they told me it needs a whole new transmission. (I sell cars, I work at a Ford dealership... parts and service are fully priced.) I'm skeptical, because it seems like nothing major has happened here and it should be fixable. I know modern attitude is to replace rather than repair, but that's not my style.
Help please! Things to try? Thoughts? If I do need a new transmission, they quoted me $2700 for new or $1600 for a used assembly. Can I source it cheaper myself, if it comes to that?

When was the last time the trans fluid was changed? You do not have many miles, but the truck is OLD. What is the condition of the trans fluid in it now? Red, or burnt? Wipe the fluid off the dipstick on a clean white paper towel, look for metal shavings. Post a pick of the towel after wipe if you want.
Still running the POS OEM Battery Terminal Connectors? If so, hack them off and replace with a quality aftermarket set like Stingers or your favorite brand.
