Some Off-Roading 101
I was trying to sell the KITT Rt 66 plates to my wife, saying that when the new season starts in the fall, everybody will be after those plates and I'll be the only person in the state to have them. That's kinda why I got them.
But in this situation, you have something I would like, and I have absolutely nothing you would like, other then my keyboard to break for a week

Creating any kind of 'wake' can cause swells to different points of the vehicle, even if it's further back than the engine compartment.
The trick when you're right at the maximum depth is to create as little wake as possible (you also don't want to get stuck on a soft bottom).
If you're at the door sills, you're already flirting with problems -- the bottom of the plastic below the doors is what you want to keep the water below.
Have some people gone deeper and pushed water up near the headlights and made it out without any problems? Yes.
Have some peopledone the same thing andlosta ton of $$ on non-warranty flood damage? Yes.

Sudden moves are not good in water. I've seen trucks go into the water too steep or too fast and bust the fan blades. If the water is moving fast - think again. So many people under estimate the power of water.
Back to my story of chasing my Commander through a water hole with a HUMVEE (if you remember it). We hit the water too fast and it stopped us (yes, we were going WAY too fast). Anyway, if you are messing around with the gas pedal instead of hold a constant speed you run the risk of sucking the water up the pipe. I doubt that it is very likely, but I did it. And from your history with your truck Mike I think you probably would too.
Moral of the story: Slow and steady!

You don't have to go slow and steady if it's only a foot or so correct? When we did the Hummer Pool, it was about 18" and we kinda hit that full force. I think that's what took out jdrew's plates though
