Default Rollover Sensor and Offroading

Would it be possible to set off the Rollover sensor, and subsequently the airbags, while offroading at a very steep angle and not actually rolling the truck?

As a matter of fact YES..........I was 4 wheeling and backing up a side of a mtn (verticle) to turn around on a narrow road and my airbags tried to deploy ..ONSTAR came on and asked me if they deployed and if I am OKand told me to get to the nearest service center they could deply anytime. I was on top of a mtn about 50 miles from town...Also I was told if you roll your vehicle and you end up on your top ONSTAR will not work because it can't get a signal out...

I guess I should let you know they had to replace the airbag sensors and replace the system, once it trys to deploy it has to be replaced. Since that should of not happened it was considereda defect it wascovered under the warranty.

Tried to go off? that's kinda scary...In order for the airbags to go off, the rollover must be imminent (much greater that 40 percent, or around 22 degrees). I've never seen one go off while off-road or heard of one (other thanTinked's trying to go off, which sounds like something may have been wrong with the SDM to begin with)...I wouldn't worry about it if you're going off-roading. I've only seen them go off once:

I am not usr eif it was the 50 miles that bothered me or the 50 miles staring at the airbag light...LOL
I have 4 wheeled alot since it was fixed and it has never happened again so I am sure it was a defective sensor.

.......or the potential of being jacked in the face at any moment by a defective airbag. Ouch! I hope you at least took your sunglasses off for the ride. [sm=smiley18.gif]

This is a definate yes as it has happened to me twice while out in the desert, both similar circumstances whencrossinga dune ridge at an angle, once the front corner tips over the edge the side airbags triggered. The second time it happened was after the dealer had changed out the rollover sensor module for a later recallibrated one, supposedly the fix for the problem. It's a hell of a bang when they deploy and leave you no option but to cut them off with a knife in order to carry on or head back to town.
After the last replacement, I don't trust the system and now do all my offroading with the fuse pulled.
