?? on Removing Roof Racks

At the end of each track at the rear, there is a part of the rail that lifts out. It is around 9-10 inches long and there is a 1/2" sized hole in it. It feels like you are going to break it in order to get it off. It snaps back on real easy, though. 
Maybe someone here has a sure fire way to remove it.
Once off you can slide the racks off easily.
