It can be exceptionally dangerous to use a tow strap with hooks.

First issue is if you attempt to do a ****** rather than a tow - that strap just isn't designed to take those kind of stresses and could part. A piece of nylon parting under that much strain can do some serious damage. When using a tow strap, put the strain on it gently and smoothly. Don't even think about a running start.

Second issue occurs if the hook at either end comes loose under strain. Holy inbound missile, Batman! You can reduce the risk a bit by "mousing" the hook, which involved tying something across the open end of the hook to keep it from slipping off. Still a hazardous business.

The best advice is to do some serious reading and if possible get some mentoring from an experienced off roader before you experiment on your own.

I have a 20 foot, 20,000lb lifting strap with loops on both ends for snatching if needed. It also comes in handy to wrap around trees and stumps.

bflank got the basics most importanly the last line, go wheeling w/ some experienced people find a nice mud hole get stuck & work on pulling each other out nothing beats hands on experience.

if you have any you need to take the straps w/ hooks & toss them or give them to some one you don't like!!

This.

I will NEVER use a tow strap with metal hooks. I carry a quality tow strap. Just throw a blanket, coat, towel, etc. over the strap if pulling hard to help absorb the blow if it breaks.
