Default Recovery Kit?

What type or brand kit do you have or what gear do you have to aid in vehicle recovery. Looking for something that can be easily stored in vehicle and used for recovery from mild stuck in the mud or snow? Thanks for the info

real basic would be 2 shackles & good quality strap/rope, that's all you need to pull some one out or get your self pulled out

why are shackles needed? can the loops of a recovery strap not take the load if just looped over the shackles on our h3? with the other end looped through itself on the other vehicle

You can loop one end through the bumper shackle but the other end needs a shackle to attach the open loop to the factory bumper shackle.

Of course you could unbolt the factory shackle and loop the strap end on but that is not practical when you are stuck.

Carry at least (1), 3/4" shackle to make the job easy, (2) if you want to make it even easier.

I picked up one of these at Harbor Freight. When recovering from the rear, it distributes the load evenly (as opposed to the right hand factory shackle).http://www.harborfreight.com/d-ring-...tch-66212.html

Does anyone know a good place to get recovery straps? The ones I got at the local Kmart are rated fairly low as tow rating.

I picked up a 30ft strap with hooks from walmart last year and was a able to pull a Ford F350 out of the snow with the hooks that came with the straps. Cost was $29.99.

I've heard it's real dangerous to use a tow strap, especially one with hooks, because it'll go tight and possibly break at one of the ends if too much force is used and those hooks will go flying like missiles at one of the vehicles. Is this true, or is someone just trying to sell the stretchable recovery strap?

Looks like somebody likes Harborfreight. Thanks for info, guess I'll just get a small bag and get some decent straps and shackles and probably one of those d-loop receivers from Harborfreight, thought that was pretty neat.
