Ok, Ok, I've searched, and can't find anything definitive. I changed Diff. fluids a few weeks ago, and my rear is starting to leak slightly around the drain plug. Maybe a few spots a day. I tried to tighten plug, but it is on tight. I'm wondering if I needed to use a new crush washer or something when re-installing the new plug. I asked Gene, and his computers don't show anything. Any ideas to stop the leak?

 

Josh, is it at the fill plug, or a drain plug?

If it is seeping at the fill, it might just be overfilled a tad, won't hurt anything. You can take out the fill plug, while on level ground and let the extra diff. fluid out.

If at a drain, you can try thread tape at the outer threads and see if that seals it up for you. You do not want any thread tape to get inside the diff.

Doc, It's the drain plug. I just wiped it off this morning, but once it starts again, I will take a pic. Where can I get thread tape, and how is it applied?

Never mind, Googled it! I guess I'll try this, but from what I've read, it's painly for PVC and plumbing. Will it work as well on metal to metal surfaces? If anyone knows any other fixes as well let me know!

 

I have used it on everything immaginable, from irrigation pump plugs, differential plugs, you name it. Just to make sure, I am talking about (white) teflon thread tape, I would not recommend any paste or putty.

 

I too recommended the teflon tape. If not, go to the hardware store and get an o-ring to fit on the end or something.

 

Does the 3 have the 3/8" drain plug or is it a bolt?

I can't say I've ever seen a plug leak...
