Default How do you remove reaer tire carrier?

I have an 03 H2 and want to remove the rear tire carrier to clean and lubricate. I thought that you could remove the spare and simply pull it out of it's bumper attachment, but it is really in there, I even tried to use a bottle jack to push it out from below but it lifted the whole back end instead. Any ideas?

From what I was told its a pressed fit, your going to have to remove the grease fitting and put some PB Blaster there and around the swing mount to free it up.......

I use mine daily and grease it every oil change..........its like the old saying........Use it or Loose it.......

Good Luck..............Rick

My Hummer dealer lubricates the H2's rear tire carrier assembly with each service as well. [sm=smiley4.gif]

it is a press fit on the '03 mount. unless it's rusted in, it will simply lift out, with some persuasion. might want to make sure you've got the pin out on the driver's side before trying to lift it.

What would be a good lubricant to use? Any mulit purpose like silicone?

I ask cause the dealer just installed a tire carrier on my 03 and I keep hearing about rusted tire carriers.

i'd use synthetic grease, seems to last longer and keep it moving more smoothly than the dino stuff. that things totin' a lot of weight, you want something that will last longer than silicone. i use the same grease as i use on the ball joints and steering components.

Just so long as it's clear eh? I have some lithium grease that i sprayed on my garage door to stop the squeaking 5 years ago and its still holding. LOL

Problem is its a nasty yellow that is a pain to clean up. :P

mine's a blood red color, but it's not like it's visible. most of it squeezes out over a few days, so you just need to clean it off to keep it from looking like crap.

And by persuasion, he means a sledge hammer near thepivot pointfrom the underside...
