Default Hood Handle Question

I could use a little help. I am trying to install chrome hood handles on the vent of my H3. It says to remove the plastic vent. I have all 10 of the tabs out but the vent seems to be glued somehow. I bought the truck used so its possible that the previous owner had something to do with this. I already cracked one corner of the vent trying to pry it loose. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point.

Thanks!!

Default hood deco?

? the black plastic hood decoration?

factory offered recall to glue them on for safety and some people actually had it done for why i dont know??

yours may be glued, and if so they probably really did it heavy duty to use up all that useless glue.

dealer could check vin to see if recall was done,,i spose

tom

othertwise,,dynamite might loosen it,,a little because if glued it will never come off in one piece

Yeah the clips dont give that much resistance so the previous owner either glued it or the dealership did when it got it. I am unsure what type they used for that "fix" so its hard to know how to counter it. You have to not pry too hard aswell cause you can rip the paint off which will cost a butt load to fix, I suggest going to the dealer about it.

One thing you can try before the hammer......get a can of mineral spirits. Dribble some around the entire perimeter of the cover, and let it leach underneath. After giving it a little time, try to gently pry up on the edges while adding more mineral spirits. It may take some time, but it will dissolve the adhesive on the double back tape (I think that's what they use), but won't harm the paint or the plastic. Eventually you should be able to get it off. Let us know.

Well I tried the mineral spirits and the fishing line with no success. Any more ideas, I noticed where I tried prying it I left small dents in the hood so that's out. Even if I have to break it I will, I just don't want to cause anymore damage to the hood.
