Question Grinding in AWD, Drives fine 4HI/LO

Hi i need some help, I drove into a snowbank today that typically would be no problem but this one kick my @$$ and i got stuck. after getting out, while in typical 4wd, it would not engage and there was a nasty grinding noise. No drive No reverse. Driving in 4LO/4HI no problem drove home 30 minutes no problems no noises, all gears were perfect. What am i looking at here? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

you are not clear. 4 hi is typical/normal. you say 4llo/4hi no problem. is that true?
no reverse has nothing to do with modes?.
so where is your problem?

were you in 4hi lock/4 lo lock

I will try to help. In the H3 you are always in 4 wheel drive. When you are in 4 Hi, you have 60% of power going to your rear and 40% going to the front. When you press Hi Lock, it gives you a 50% split between the front and rear. To go to and from 4 Low, your transmission must be in neutral at a standstill or going less than 3 MPH. I don't know what configuration you were in when you had the problem but that is the simple explanation of the system. If you were pressing buttons and spinning wheels while stuck, something may have not properly engaged. You may have accidently put the Transfer Case in neutral. Without more information, there is no way of knowing exactly what happened. I would educate myself and properly go through all the configurations to see if they are now working properly. You can download an Owner's Manual at hummer.com or do a search on this forum for more detailed information on the drivetrain. Good Luck
