The transfer case locks on all of them, not the axles.

thanks for the replies guys

from the consensus, looks like I should just save a few grand and get a 2006

anything I should know or ask the dealer before making the purchase? Such as things that maybe you all didn't realize until later?

so does it pretty much make the front and rear wheels revolve at exactly the same rate(locked together)? How is this different from the differential lock in the adventure package of an '07? Does it make the left and right rear wheels revolve at the same rate?

here's how it was explained to me. 4hi is for every day driving & the transfer case splits power more to the rear than the front (60/40 I think). 4hi lock splits power 50/50 front & rear. 4lo lock is the same but lower gearing. The wheels will still turn at different speeds this is where the locking differentials come in, they lock the axle so the wheels spin the same reguardless of which one has traction.

This is a good summary - the transfer case controls the split of power between front and rear, and the front and rear differentials control splitting the power between the left and right (ie rear diff splits the power between the 2 rear wheels etc).

As I understand it, the H3 also has an electronic system that will apply the brakes to a slipping wheel to increase the torque in the opposite wheel... I think the military H1 had something similar.

...and got it for $21,900 which I thought was a good price

Already been off roading twice. I have two jobs, which is how I'm paying for it, and any spare time I have now is spent on some dirt and mud. I absolutely love my H3! I can't wait to go to the off road park in Hot Springs, AR(close to where I live). Anyone else been/go there?

Hey guys, I'm brand new to this forum. I thought it would be a wise idea to talk to some Hummer veterans before I make the big decision.

I'm definitely getting an H3; I've been looking at them(almost obsessively) for over a year now. I'm talking to some local dealers about their used H3's. I figured I'd get a 2007 or 2008 and not a 2006 because of the power increase in the 3.7 I5. But also for usually having lower miles and the manufacturer's warranty. My first question:

1) Is there that big of a difference between the 3.5 and the 3.7? If there's really not a difference I might try to find a 2006 with low miles because I'm sure it'd be much cheaper.

I'd like to get an H3 with the Adventure package for the little extra in the locking differential and already having the 285's. But I figured even if I don't get the Adventure package I'll still eventually upgrade to the larger tires. So my second question:

2) Is the Adventure package worth it? I plan on doing moderate off roading, no Hell's Gate kind of stuff.

This will be my first SUV, I've owned all cars. '93 Mustang, '86 Fiero GT, and now a '01 Mustang. I'm not real affluent with off roading, but I'm excited to learn. Which brings me to my third question:

3) I understand driving in 4High, but what does the 4High Lock and 4Low Lock do? What is it locking?

I really appreciate any help you guys can give me and anything I need to look for or ask about when looking over an H3 on the lot.

Where in the Hot Springs area are you? I am about 2 hrs south of you in Magnolia. I come to Hot Springs pretty regular. I bought an 06 loaded and love it. I put 315's on it and a front leveling kit. I have ridden the Off Road Park up there but on my 750 Brute Force, not my Hummer. I did use it to pull my Brute up there.

Benton, actually, so just 40 minutes away. I've been looking everywhere for places to go off roading, and saw some on the state park maps and there seems to be some trails for 4x4s, not just atv and horses. I'd be sure to call first to confirm what they consider an Off Highway/Road Vehicle.
