Painting rims any tips?
Instead of getting new rims ($$$) for my H3 I'm thinking about getting them powder coated, glossy black, I'm new to the whole modifying cars thing and I don't know much so if anyone can share some advice or anything, it would be much appreciated.
Here's a link to a post when I did the rims on my Monte SS: http://www.montecarloss.com/communit...797&page=1
Three years later and they still look great.

Did you clear coat them? what kind of paint/clearcoat did you use? I used Duplicolor HWP104 for the color and cleared the painted area only with HWP103. I didn't clear the polished areas because, as 85_SS pointed out, clear has a tendency to flake off of a highly polished surface.

On the cost issue, I did all 4 rims for under $40. If you're willing to put the time into it, this is not a high dollar upgrade. I would not let that disuade you. One other thing to note, I really was impressed with the Duplicolor paint. I typically hold to the attitude that any paint from a spraycan is second rate compared to something applied with a gun. This stuff is tough. You'll be happy with it.
08, those look great!!!
I was also thinking about getting my rims all done up in black, as new rims are quite costly :P
So you just bought a spraycan of paint and it has stayed on for 3 years? That's pretty good quality and it looks great too!

Yeah, it was from a spray can. You need to make sure you get a product specifically for wheels. I seriously doubt stuff from the 99 cent bargain bin would hold up. I had heard a lot of good things about the Duplicolor products and was thoroughly impressed. One thing I may not have mentioned prior is that I stripped all of the old paint first. No primer is necessary. Right now I'm doing a second set of SS wheels and plan on using the same process.
