Unhappy Brakes grinding.....

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but after driving awhile, especially with my trailer(5'x15'-approx. 1,500lbs) when I hit the brakes, the front sounds like they are grinding metal on metal. I checked, they were fine. I took it to the dealer, and they said my brakes still had about 3/4 life left on them and to bring it back if it does it again. (of course, it didn't do it at the dealership) Still does it once in awhile but the dealership is an hour away and I was wondering if I could just change pads and rid the problem. Is this a common problem for the H3? The H3 is an 06 with 45k on it. Started grinding at about 22k. Thanks guys.
