Well that's one I'd have never guessed. Apparently someone thought that the instant function was not useful at GM and decided to remove that feature or they traded the instant feature for a fuel used feature.... It is fun when coasting downhill, with a tailwind, and see my H2 proclaim that I'm getting 50 miles per gallon. lol
2003 on the left, 2006 on the right....

Mixman . I thinkin general Gm did good in removing the feature . There will be more hate and more people loosing hair while looking at the display marking 4mpg while going up hill towing a boat .
And not talking about thousand more thread in this forum on "please help how can I save gas "
Lol
I played with torque on my 96 Z71 and was able to get it very close with my calculations at fill ups.
Its pretty interesting to watch how your driving habits effect the MPG, I was able to get right at 2 MPG improvement just by watching how I drive around town.
I just ordered the SGe by Scangauge at Amazon for $99 This is an OBDII device that gives about 15 different reading in real time. You can use the MPG gauge to see your MPG in true, real time!
Its a calculated value based on mass air flow and the idea that the PCM will keep the fuel flow at 14.7 to 1. I don't think any of the H2's had a fuel flow sensor.
With some tweaking you can get it very close based on mileage from fill ups.

I used the most reliable method
fill up the tank .... Run 300 miles then refill and calculate how much gas cost me those 300 miles.... did it 4 time in the road trip . I only could get 12 mpg
but carrying a heavy load ,
The display avg mpg (11.8) was pretty close to my calculations
I usually don't care about the mpg but in a 2000 miles it does matter
