Default 315's and stock rims

A few days ago I made a trip to Americas tire and had a guy price out 4 Goodyear Duratrac tires in 285. I initially told him I wanted 315's but he stated they wouldn't work and that there'd be a high chance is I was doing some serious off roading the tire could come off. Is this the truth or a bunch of bull****? My appointment to install the 285's is on Saturday, any input is appreciated. Thank you.

You're getting a hybrid of truth and BS. He is 100% correct that a 315 is larger than should be mounted on a stock rim per Goodyear. I wouldn't install them either because of the liability. "High chance" to come off while offroading is the BS. You will have an increased chance of breaking a bead with a wider tire. How much of an increased chance? Negligible. That's most likely to occur under a heavy load. It would be more of an issue if you did this on a pickup and then loaded it down with 2 tons of cargo. An SUV, not so much. I doubt you're going to find anyone in real world conditions that has had a problem with 315's.

I just basically wanted to know if they would fit on my standard 16 in rim? He mentioned something about the beads coming loose and the tire coming off. So that's true then? I should just stick with the 285's on stock h3 rims? I couldve sworn I saw some people with the stock rims with 315's....

A few members have 315s on their 3 with stock rims. Some have their truck leveled though. I can't imagine there would be many instances where the tire would come off the bead unless it was a heavy load. They sound like they are trying to cover themselves in case you did weigh the truck down or something and it did ever break.

Heavy load? What's considered a heavy load?

You're not mistaken. Many people have 315's on factory rims, myself included. They will work, but TECHNICALLY, they are wider than what is approved by Goodyear (and all other manufacturer's as far as I know) for use on said rim.

I couldn't really put a number on it. In my example, I just meany like a loaded down pickup. You're not going to load a ton of gravel in your H3. You're never realistically going to have more than 1,000# of cargo in your H3.

How long have you had the 315's on your stock rims? Any problems?

That the tires will come off the beads is silly. The stk rim is 7 1/2" wide and goodyear want's an 8" rim. What happens is the tread will not be quite as flat as a 8" rim but there is no problem. I purchased a spare set of rims off e bay and mtd a set of 315 Goodyear MTR's with Kevlar. I drove them about 6500 miles on a vacation and had absolutly no problem whatsoever. Here is a link to a bunch of pics of the vacation and you'll notice the tires. You don't have to raise the front end either. I did on mine for a little additional clearance but when I first put them on (un lifted) I had no problems. On a hard turn they rub slightly on the sway bar. No big deal.
