URGENT: key locked in the ignition with a dead battery?
I'm out of state until June for work. My friend is watching my h3. She went to start it and nothing. Key is stuck in the ignition. I have looked through threads but no real answers. If I can't get her to figure this out... I'll have a key there until June or have to spend $900 flying out to figure out something to do. Battery is 1.5 years old. I never had this happen. I should have disconnected the battery while I was gone not have her start it up every week. Lesson learned. But will charging the battery be better or worse? Does anyone have a concrete solution? Steering wheel isn't locked. It's not that wait 10 min and it'll start thing either. The battery is dead.
A dead battery will lock the key in the ignition. Also, even with a new fully charged battery you need to run your Hummer every 7-10 days or the battery will go dead. It's a known problem. I have installed a battery cut out switch in mine so when I go away on vacation I can cut the battery out and keep it from going dead while I'm away. Frequently I go away on business travel for 2-3 weeks at a time and after returning to my Hummer in the airport parking lot and finding the battery dead on two occasions I installed the cut out switch. Fast, easy fix.
I'd have her charge it up, start it and run it a bit, then park it and remove the positive battery terminal for now.
Might help if you understood what a "dead battery" is. Not like a fuel tank where half full is good. You need 12.3-12.6 volts to run it, 12.0 volts is DEAD, useless. Might get a light to come on, dash to illuminate, but dead as a doorknob.
If you jump it, the key can be removed, if you have an old school 12 volt charger/booster it can be removed.
Charge you battery, and keep it charged with a battery tender plus........ best little chargers you can find, and they maintenance float in storage.
