Default U Joints - To Grease, Or Not To Grease

Got a squeaky Universal Joint, worse in the morning, pretty quite after it heats up. It chirps when you hit a road bump with throttle load, quite when coasting.
I am pretty sure it is the front U Joint on the H3 front shaft, I know the grease is fairly dry. Put it on a lift and can't find anything, all are tight and make no noise turning wheels. Front shaft CV at the T Case seems solid as a rock.

I am going to do the front U Joint next week and see if the noise goes away. If the noise stays, I will move on to both rears.

Just throwing this out there, who prefers Greaseable vs Non-Greasable?

Either way, I always pay the extra few bucks for the heavy duty versions.

So what do you think? Pros and cons.

If you want strength and less chance breaking a u joint {race /offroad } I would go non greasable.
I use the greasable on my hummer h3 as it is not driven in a severe duty application.
All said I have only seen u joint failure at the drag strip or the mud bogs

You point is a good one, but I have never seen an H3 blow a U Joint yet. I have seen Half Shaft CV joints kick the bucket.

I am not sure what the actual strength difference is if you compare a standard OEM AC Delco #45U0131 Non-Greasable (which came from the factory) to say a heavy duty Greasable
AC Delco #45U0186? Probably some engineering data somewhere.

Spicer non greasable is my favorite U joint. That is probably who makes them for AC Delco.

Default Serve mine with grease

Difference between paying over and over non greaseable or mabe just once for a part that will last ever and ever greaseable.
Stopping the noise that was coming from both front wheel bearings by greasing non greasable front hub bearings through abs sensor openings instead of paying for replacement of both felt so good not being bent over and......... 😲 by 110 years of GMC engineering.
The grease in the bearings has to be water soluble because even condensation breaks it down. How else can my hummer h3 with only 40000 miles needs front wheel bearings they made them non greasable so they fail after just so long no matter how many miles you put on your truck. Have bearing noise ? Jack up truck use Jack stand remove two caliper bolts pull caliper assy off and hang on small pry bar then pull off rotor mark where it was on hub. Bend dust sheild to allow you to remove abs sensor they put sheild so you can't remove sensor without bending it everything to stop you from fixing it easy. Remove abs sensor screw pull pry out sensor. Clean around it a little first. Then wrap tape around grease gun tip to help seal it against abs sensor hole then pump grease until it comes out between cv boot hub. Stick in abs sensor tighten screw bend dust sheild back slide caliper assy back in place tighten two bolts put wheel back on and tighten be astounded how easy it's to save you at least 300-400 dollars. The sound will diminish and go away in couple of days. As long as abs system light does not come on your bearings still have life left in them after the light comes on it means bearing has too much play and is affecting abs sensor. At this point you need new hub bearings and maybe sensors. Too bad Muir did not write a book like his how to work on VW for complete idiots. For Hummer.

Completely sealed U-Joints for the H3. Might as well replace them all DOC since the rig is new to you.
I know you don't "fix it until it's broke" but it is nice to know all 3 U joints will be brand new and done right.

OH J-F-C!
PLEASE, STFU already! You are like a broken record with only a few posts.
People have been greasing "non serviceable hubs" for years with Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, etc. It's not "new" nor is is ground breaking.
Heck some aftermarket manufacturers make zirk fittings that plug into the ABS ports to grease them for specific applications.

Default Not everyone knows what you know what's wrong with sharing?

Anyone who would like to know better way to get something done or cheaper for those of us living from pay check to pay check. Why not share answers to others can't hurt to talk about the ease it takes to avoid stealerships ripoffs.

First off I made this post over a YEAR ago. It was regarding my 2007 just to get a conversation started. Ended up replacing all the U Joints with Dana Spicer Non-Greasable U Joints. Sold the 2007 this April. No reason for you to dig it up.

We have all seen your Super Special Secret Agent grease it up posts, more than once, which is more than necessary. We get it, it is all a big conspiracy by the GM Man to get us to have broken down no good trucks so he can keep us all slaving at work burning our coin of the realm buying replacement parts and toiling away at repairs all day.

Here is an idea, find some uses for grease that we do not already know about. Like how to grease your computer keys, cell phone charging port, blender blades, exhaust pipe, vacuum cleaners and the like...............
