Two Questions
I am not trying to remove the duct. The up and down vents work fine, it is the left/right blades that do not work properly. When turning the wheel at the bottom of the vents only one of the blades(?) in the vent move the rest seem to be disconnected.
Take the center console piece out (easy to do) and fix it , or............... buy one off ebay.
Never used seat covers for anything. Need new seats? Upgrade to leather and buy a set from a pick & pull, car-part.com, ebay, Craig's List.....
Good luck.

I tried to fix my broken directional blades with some super glue a few years back. Didn't work out as I would have hoped so I found a new, OEM air vent on eBay for a decent price. Doc is right, pretty easy to pop the trim bezel out (two fingers inside the 12v outlets and pull up and out) and swap one or both air vents out with a brand new one. No more sticking your fingers in there to move the directional blades. Here's a link to one on eBay: OEM NEW Center Dash Air Vent Grille Left Driver 06-10 Hummer H3 H3T - 25816724
