Some Bolt On Mods Complete! 1st Impression and Review!
Hi Guys!
So I just completed the following mods a few weeks back on my 06 H3 Adventure Package 5speed. MAN.
-Schultz Header c/w cat
-Secondary Cat Delete
-New Magnaflow muffler w/ dual exhaust out
-PCM of NC Mail order TUNE
-SuperModulations PT Throttlebody
-Air Docs intake (installed 2 yrs ago)
-Airraid cold air filter ( put the stock cover back on after Doc mentioned that the cover proves more hp on the dyno)
Alright so I'll do a quick personal review everything
1. The Schultz is basically Magnaflows cheaper header choice.
The welds and bends were not the best quality. Finish was pretty rough.
I spent a few hours grinding and filing off loose burs and even cleaned up the finish on the mounting bracket portion of the headers. You could literally see the imperfections which would lead to exhaust leaks IMO. Lastly, I did a quick hand polishing and it looked much more appealing!
Can't say power gain in itself because I did it alongside rhe rest of exhaust and PCM tune. You can clearly hear the exhaust flow since the heat shield is gone and it's just Stainless pipes instead of the cast iron. Much lighter than the stock so all in all I'm sure it's been an improvement.
2. Deleted the Cat pre resonator. Straight piped it. You can definitely smell a bit of exhaust once in a while when giving some good gas!
3. So the Magnaflow muffler I got was actually for the firebird/Camaro. All in all, my mechanic still fit it in place as it's smaller than the stock, and sounds very smooth with a nice low end growl at low rpms. Much more fun to drive.
4. The Tune was awesome. Response timing and acceleration increasing all improved vastly. The whole front end sways up and down with the momentum when going from 1st to 2nd. The one thing I may change is have them tune for a base idle to be a bit higher as I find myself constantly giving the little buffer throttle now to engage at that higher rpm. (Will do this next year when I send in to get the pcm patch for the EFan conversion)
5. So the throttle body I did 4 days after everything else I listed. Throttle Response 100% improved without question coming off a dead stop.
Two possible side effects, which may or may not be causation but more just correlation:
i. I did get a limp mode once, randomly which I haven't had in 2 years since I dealt with a bad MAF and connector corrosion.
ii. Right after a cold start, if you throttle over 2500rpm, sometimes the fan seems to keep throttle body open or stuck and the rpm gauge will sit at 3000rpm until I give a bit of gas or put it into gear to kick it out of its funk. No major issue as of yet.
5. Air doc and the performance filter was the first mod I did to my H3 when I purchased it in 22. Acceleration Response noticed right away and would say I felt about 10-15hp difference from it alone.
ALL SAID AND DONE:
1st Impressions: Feels like I'm driving a new vehicle. Feels like I have a well powered mid truck now and can 100% keep up with traffic on the highway. I was toe to toe with a stock bmw x5. I did a little online analysis and I may be wrong but looking at compared to the stock 220hp, I could be anywhere between 265-290 hp, depending on the actual affects of all components and their respective compounded effects with all the mods combined.
I do have a question. My mechanic left the stock resonator, is it restrictive or should I leave it. We left the stock 2.5" piping as it was in tact and good shape. If you guys have knowledge of it being restrictive I'll bring it over to my exhaust buddy to do a final fix up.
I didn't want to spend for the sake of it, and as a master electrician and owner of a small business, my mechsnic and i barter alot of work which makes things more affordable. But sometimes it's hard to force him to do things over rhe top!
Any other advice or opinions I'm all ears! Cleaned up engine bay with Air Doc Rear exhaust Header our of box Post cleaned and polished
You have one more not on your list. An Efan Conversion.
who has the best Efan conversions kits. PMC of NC (Where my ECU was tuned), said they are loud as a downside. Will that be the case with any EFan comversion? Comsidering it for all that engine heat, and thinking about a Higher Output Alternator for my winch? Any suggestions on both?
